Ghost Mannequin
Ghost mannequin, also called invisible mannequin or hollow man, is a product photography technique that shows a garment holding a three dimensional human shape with no visible person or form inside it, so the shopper sees how the piece hangs rather than how it lies flat.
The traditional method is a composite. The garment is photographed on a mannequin or a model, then photographed again with the inside of the collar, the cuffs and the hem exposed, usually by shooting the piece inside out or draped over a smaller form. A retoucher masks out the mannequin and pastes in those interior shots so the neckline reads as an opening rather than a cut edge. Done well it is invisible; done badly the collar looks pasted on, which is why the technique is usually charged per garment.
It exists because the two cheap alternatives both lose information. A flat lay is fast but shows a garment as a rectangle, so a shopper cannot tell whether the shoulders are structured or the waist is fitted. An on-model shot shows the fit but introduces a person, which changes the styling, dates the image, and ties the photograph to a booking. Ghost mannequin sits between them: fit information with nothing to distract from the product.
Most marketplaces treat it as the house style for apparel. It crops predictably, it fills a square frame consistently across a catalog, and it does not require a release. Brands that sell across several platforms often shoot ghost mannequin as the primary listing image and use on-model shots as the secondary ones.
AI has changed the input requirement rather than the output. Generating the effect from a single flat photograph means the interior shots and the masking step disappear, so the cost stops scaling with the number of SKUs. What does not change is the source: a wrinkled or badly lit garment photograph produces a wrinkled, badly lit result, because the technique reveals shape and cannot invent condition.

Background removal cuts the subject away from what is behind it. Ghost mannequin also removes the form the garment was on and rebuilds the parts it was hiding, such as the inside of the collar, so the piece reads as hollow rather than as a cutout of a dressed mannequin.
Do I still need a physical mannequin?
Not for the AI route. The effect can be generated from a flat lay or a hanger shot, which is the whole point of doing it this way: the mannequin, the second interior exposure and the compositing step were the expensive parts.
Which garments are hardest?
Sheer fabrics, heavy knits with deep texture, and anything with complex interior construction such as lined jackets. Structured pieces with a clear neckline, like shirts, tees and coats, are the easiest and the most convincing.
