Do I need a reference image of the style?

No. You describe the style in a sentence and the model works from that, so you are not limited to the styles somebody thought to ship as presets.

Will it change my subject?

It is not supposed to. The model repaints the image rather than generating a new one, so the person, the product and the composition stay recognisable. A very aggressive style description takes more liberties than a restrained one.
